Kick Off the New Year: Six Tasks to Complete in January

As the new year begins, it’s beneficial to reflect on the past year of homeownership—what worked well and what could be improved. Taking time to review the previous year will enable you to set goals and make informed choices for the coming year. Stay on the path to success in 2024 with these six practical and effective tips:

Rethink Your Budget

Incorporate expected upcoming changes, such as downsizing or a job promotion, into your budget. Consider making adjustments to bills, such as your phone plan, or entertainment expenses. Don’t forget to set a realistic monthly savings goal.

Organize Your Seasonal Storage Space

The post-holiday period provides a perfect opportunity to declutter and reorganize your seasonal storage space. Instead of haphazardly storing holiday items, take inventory, declutter, and reorganize. This not only keeps you organized throughout the year but also makes it easier to find holiday decorations next year.

Assess Your Home

Begin the new year effectively by thoroughly conducting a home assessment. Scrutinize each room and categorize issues into mechanical, structural, cosmetic, and wish list items. This assessment is invaluable for prioritizing necessary improvements throughout the year, especially if you’re on a limited budget.

Build an Emergency Fund for Home Repairs

Owning a home brings potential financial challenges. Prepare for unexpected repairs by allocating 1% to 3% of your home’s value for annual maintenance. Being financially equipped not only reduces stress but enhances your enjoyment of homeownership.

Plot Household Tasks on a Yearly Calendar

Whether electronic or paper, a regularly consulted calendar helps keep household tasks organized. Distribute tasks throughout the year and categorize into personal finance, yard or outdoor chores, infrequent interior cleaning, monthly or quarterly maintenance, and planned upgrades or repairs. Spreading out the workload will prevent you from getting overwhelmed.

Set Home Improvement Goals

Identify areas of your home that could benefit from improvement or renovation. Whether it’s a kitchen upgrade, bathroom remodel, or a fresh coat of paint, setting specific home improvement goals will provide a road map for enhancing your living space this year.

Here’s to a year filled with satisfaction, a well-organized home, and success in your homeownership journey. Cheers!
